Equator Therapeutics is focused upon the development of pharmaceutically-induced thermogenesis to improve metabolic health and promote weight loss. Mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell, can create heat because of H+ leak across a specific layer inside them. This H+ leak happens because of the interaction of long-chain fatty acids with a protein called UCP1 found in brown fat and another carrier protein called AAC found in other tissues. Equator Therapeutics is developing ways of manipulating this process to increase metabolic heat production and thus promote weight-loss and improved metabolic health.
