Accelerating Technologies To Overcome Age-Related Disease and Extend Healthy Human Lifespan
Strategically driving forward projects with outsized tactical value to the field of aging research.
The Lifespan Research Institute (LRI) conducts targeted scientific research with the explicit goal of accelerating the development of therapies that address the root causes of aging, leading to the defeat of age-related diseases and the extension of healthy human lifespan. This approach has amazing potential to positively affect the human condition by giving people interventions and treatments that yield more years of healthy, productive life.
We do internal research at our own Research Center in Mountain View, CA, fund external work at top universities and institutes around the world, and invest in companies moving rejuvenation biotech into the clinic.
Age-related diseases remain the leading cause of death worldwide. We believe it is essential to allocate our time and resources strategically and efficiently to accelerate progress toward effective interventions.
Our research program is designed to identify and address high-leverage bottlenecks and have outsized tactical value towards driving the field of aging research forward. We conduct broad analysis across the longevity field and consult closely with our world-classScientific Advisory Boardto identify the most impactful projects and critical gaps in the field. Our model is agile, milestone-driven, and impact-focused.
As a public charity, we are able to pursue projects expected to have large and enduring effect sizes, even if they are not amenable to the short-term incentives of the market or academia. We are laser focused on approaches with the greatest potential to achieve our shared mission of extending healthy human lifespan, period.
We evaluate projects on the following core criteria:
Ability To Boldly Impact the Biology of Aging and Extend Healthy Life
We prioritize research with the ability to actually and significantly extend healthy human lifespan — by fundamentally reversing, repairing, or otherwise obviating damage which builds up in human beings over time.
Capability for Rapid Translation into Humans
Projects with a clear translational pathway into humans and direct therapeutic relevance are essential to driving progress. Mice are great, but human beings are not mice.
Uniqueness and Non-Duplicative Effort
We seek out high-leverage projects that are essential to progress but overlooked by traditional funders. These are the missing links: scientifically necessary but institutionally neglected, and uniquely targetable by nonprofits.
Paradigm-Shifting Technological Advances
Biology research is ripe for technological disruptions able to increase the pace of the entire field at once. We highly value projects able to catalyze a step-change in how aging research is done, such as digital biomarkers able to create new indications for aging, decentralized science approaches able to expand access to interventions, and outside-the-box therapeutic modalities too bold for others to try.
Ability to Inspire the Public and Lead the World to Prioritize Aging Research
Given our expertise in engaging the public with large-scale outreach initiatives, we are always on the look out for research projects which have a unique ability to capture the public imagination and inspire powerful support for aging research generally.
Learn about our Internal and External Research Projects:
In addition to our internal and external funded research projects, we lead a variety of initiatives that support on-mission activities no matter where they are in the funding pipeline, from crowdfunding early stage projects through to catalyzing investment through our Longevity Investor Network.
We make the ground fertile for the entire field through advocacy initiatives that foster societal change, increasing available public and private funding for aging research.
Through our investor network, we catalyze private investment in biotechnology companies developing interventions that target the root mechanisms of aging.
We also create informative infographics, publish research findings, and run a variety of educational opportunities training the next generation of researchers into the aging process.
